Casa Stephanopoulos on the Market

Courtesy of TTR Sotheby's International Realty

Last month Georgetown’s own George Stephanopoulos was offered the hosting job of Good Morning America. As GMA is a New York-based show, George had to move himself and the rest of his family (the “Stephanopouli”) up north.

While there was some speculation around Georgetown about whether he’d keep some connection to his home of many years, it looks like any connection won’t come in the form of a mansion on 31st St.: they just put their home up for sale.

And for a cool $6.35 million, it can now be yours! (Although by GM’s calculation, it will probably go for about $5.67 million). Check out what could be yours after the jump: Continue reading

Brooks Brothers to Open In Georgetown

It has been rumored for months that Brooks Brothers was going to move into the vacated Smith and Hawken and the soon-to-be-vacant Pottery Barn spaces. The ANC2E agenda for next week confirms it: Brooks Brothers will be moving to 3077 M St.

Specifically, Brooks Brothers is seeking approval of alterations to the storefront, awnings, and signs for that address. Theoretically they could just be moving in to the Smith and Hawken space, which occupies the top floor of 3077 M St. But GM has heard since at least last summer that Pottery Barn plans to vacate the store. Plus, the Smith and Hawken space is too small for a full Brooks Brothers’ store. So his best guess is that Brooks Brothers is taking over the whole building (or at least the Pottery Barn space).

It’ll be sad to see Pottery Barn go. It was a good place to pick up relatively cheap homewares, but as Anthony Lanier (whose EastBanc owns the building) pointed out last September, they can’t pay the rent selling candles.

In the end most people will wonder why there wasn’t a Brooks Brothers already in Georgetown. Well wonder no more.

Who Would Go to Western High School?

In the period of just one week, the idea to relocate the Duke Ellington School for the Arts was floatedvilified, and conditionally retracted. As it stands now, it appears the DCPS would like to eventually move the school into better facilities but only once the suitable location can be found and the funds secured.

A secondary goal of relocating the Ellington School would be the re-creation of Western High School, which occupied the Ellington School building from its construction in 1897 until 1977. Ever since then, there has been no neighborhood high school in Ward 2. Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans has long advocated bringing such a neighborhood high school back to Ward 2.

But who would go to Western High School if it were re-created? Before answering that, it’s important to realize quite how large Ward 2 is: Continue reading

Puro Cafe Opens

Way back in October, GM first reported on the impending opening of Puro Cafe on upper Wisconsin Ave. For a small cafe, it really seemed to take a long time to actually open. But today the wait is finally over and Puro Cafe opened its doors to the public. GM stopped by for lunch and he can attest that the wait was worth it.

The first thing you’ll notice when you enter Puro Cafe is that you’ll feel like you walked into a high-end hair salon. Think of it as if Ilo started selling paninis: the aesthetic stark and modern, the music background-techno.

As GM reported last October, the design team behind Puro Cafe is Tasty Concepts, who are actually located just upstairs from the cafe. They are also the design team behind restaurants like Mei N Yu and West End, and their professional hand is evident throughout Puro Cafe.
