Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • What should we call him? (GM’s answer: the Georgetown Sexual Assaulter).
  • Anybody see whether the Land Shark billboard is still up? If it’s not it is, EastBanc owes the city $2000.

We’re Not So Different After All

This weekend the New York Times published a fascinating chart displaying the top ten movie rentals for each zip code according to Netflix. Various other blogs have already commented on how this chart reflects stark sociological differences across the region, but GM was particularly drawn to a much more local issue.

Georgetown is made up of two zip codes: 20057 and 20007. The first contains only the university. The second contains all the full-year residents (as well as Burleith, Glover Park and the Palisades). Thus 20007 is “Town” and 20057 is “Gown.”

So how do our choices match up?

ANC Preview: Here’s Your Chance

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stay at an ANC meeting until the bitter end? Of course you haven’t! But that’s no reason not to do it at least once. And next Monday may be your best chance.

The Old Georgetown Board doesn’t meet in January. Therefore the ANC doesn’t have a single Old Georgetown Matter to consider. As a result, Monday’s meeting will be the shortest of the year.

But that doesn’t mean it will be boring! Well, at least not by ANC standards. Check out a few of the items on the agenda:

  • An update from Safeway. Will they meet their May deadline? Have they rented out the first floor retail yet?
  • Snow removal. How did the city perform? How about citizens and businesses?
  • West End Fire Station. How would we be covered if the city goes ahead with plans to redevelop the West End Fire Station plot?
  • Philly Pizza Showdown. Tuesday is the big showdown before the Zoning Administrator for Philly Pizza. Does the restaurant have a chance?

So come on over to Visitation Monday night and join in on the condensed fun.

Update on the Landshark Lager Sign

The other day GM wrote about the billboard at 3345 M St. advertising Landshark Lager beer. It was put up on the windows of a vacant building owned by EastBanc. GM asserted that it probably violates the Old Georgetown Act if not other relevant rules and regulations.

Turns out it’s “other relevant rules and regulations” not the Old Georgetown Act that apply. GM got in contact with the Fine Arts Commission, which oversees the Old Georgetown Board. The approach they are taking is that if a sign does not stay up for 60 days, it is not subject to the Old Georgetown Act. So GM was wrong to assert that this is a clear violation of the Old Georgetown Act.

However, since the sign appears in the Georgetown Historic District, it is subject to the jurisdiction of the Historic Preservation Office in the District Office of Planning. Upon being notified of the sign by the ANC (which happened last week) the enforcement office of the HPO notified EastBanc that even a temporary sign like this requires HPO approval.  Since that approval was not sought EastBanc has until next Monday to remove the sign or face a $2,000 penalty. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Apparently the Mayor-for-Life used to use the Man-Who-Would-be-Mayor’s Georgetown apartment to use drugs back in the 80s.
  • Local dog is a pop star.
  • New cafe on upper-Wisconsin where the District Fine Arts used to be.
