Georgetown Census Participation Good, Not Great

GM was tipped by DCist today to check out the Census participation for Georgetown. You can look up on the Census website and find out how good each census tract is about answering those ten questions. Georgetown’s is already better than it was 10 years ago, but it’s still lagging behind the national average.

Here are the stats:

Thomas Jefferson St. Next Up For Bridge Reconstruction

A little less than a year ago, the city announced plans to reconstruct all the vehicular bridges over the canal. They’re all quite old and each require a complete tear down/reconstruction. Unfortunately, it was estimated that each bridge would take a year to reconstruct.

They started with 30th St. last August. Ever since then it’s been closed to vehicular traffic. The city built a small pedestrian bridge about 20 feet up the canal. It’s been about nine months and they’ve still got decent amount of work left to do: Continue reading

Frenchy by M.V. Jantzen.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Great shots of the French Market this weekend.
  • The ANC voted against giving Dixie Liquors an exemption from the Single Sales Ban. ABRA is supposed to give that vote “great weight” but they already gave the waiver. We’ll see whether they’ll revoke it.

Ridiculous Georgetown Home Featured on Teen Cribs

(Sorry for the lack of embed, it just wasn’t working for some reason. Also, skip ahead to 14:30.)

The crib in question is the home of Ben and Deb Johns at 1633 29th St. GM’s walked by it a million times and knew it was awesome. He just didn’t realize it was Teen Cribs awesome.

(Disclaimer: This was from a reader’s tip. GM doesn’t as a practice watch Teen Cribs. He only watches normal Cribs because he’s a purist.)

A little background: In 2008, the Council voted to ban the sale of “singles” in Ward 2. Specifically, DC Code Section 25-345 states, in part, that no liquor store in Ward 2 shall:

Sell, give, offer, expose for sale, or deliver an individual container of beer, malt liquor, or ale with a capacity of 70 ounces or less, as well as spirits (liquor) sold in half-pints or smaller volumes.

Similar singles bans exist in other sections of town, including Wards 4, 6, and 8. These bans are aimed at reducing petty crimes associated with public drunkenness. Generally speaking, they have been popular. Continue reading
