GU Stained Glass by GUCNDLS.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Errata: GM reported over the last week that a vote was possible soon from the Council on the Hurt Home surplussing. That was incorrect. The meeting last week was a roundtable discussion and it was adjourned until July 1. Before the Council can vote on the surplus recommendation it has to be voted out of the committee, which hasn’t happened yet. More explanation here.
  • Georgetowner’s love of Georgetown not contingent on clear vistas.

New Liquor Licensees Revealed

Yesterday’s Georgetown Current contained an article discussing the decision by the ABC Board to expand the available liquor licenses within the Georgetown Moratorium by seven. ABRA officials had previously stated that the licenses would be issued on a first-come-first-served basis. The Current listed the seven parties who have applications pending and thus who are likely to take home the new licenses. Some are familiar faces, some are new, and others just left GM a little confused.

Bill’s Bar & Burger – 3347 M St.

That’s the old Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory Building, so it would seem a new tenant has been found. It also seems that this is related to a bar with the exact same name in the Meat Packing District in New York. So like Serendipity 3, it would be a DC outpost of a NYC establishment. Given the lackluster appearance of the burger on the restaurant’s own website, GM is not too excited for this arrival.

Tackle Box – 3245 M St.

This is no surprise. Jonathan Umbell has been trying to secure a license for Tackle Box for quite some time. Hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy a beer with your lobster roll soon.

Puro Cafe – 1529 Wisconsin

A recent arrival to the upper Wisconsin Ave. neighborhood, Puro Cafe has received positive reviews. The only sticking point GM can foresee is if they want to serve drinks in their backyard late at night. Since that backs up to residences on Q St. and 32nd, those homeowners might object. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Really cool then-and-now piece on Sarah’s Market.
  • The Current reported that the deal between the Corcoran and EastBanc to sell the Fillmore School was canceled over a disagreement on timing. Presumably this will delay any possible sale, which would seem to be a larger timing issue, but what does GM know.

Next Monday the ANC will meet for their July session. It will be their last meeting until September, so this is the last call for project approval for two months.

Despite the looming summer break, this month’s agenda is not too full. So make yourself some Countrytime lemonade, put on some spf 15, and check out the light summer reading after the jump.

Dumbarton Oaks by John Weiss.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Trees for Georgetown is reminding people to water your street trees! If you think you’re uncomfortable, imagine how they feel.
  • Some confusion over the Council’s Hurt Home round table this week: GM was told it was going to be Wednesday, but it looks like it was actually supposed to be Monday, but in fact it looks like the Monday meeting was postponed. More info when it becomes available.

Hurt Home Possibly to be Sold for Only $1.3 Million

Last week, the DC Council held a hearing on the proposed surplussing of the Hurt Home, a large District-owned building at 3050 R St. Neighbors saw flaws in the substance and process of that decision, and several went to the hearing to have their voices heard. The Council did not act on the surplus request last week, but will vote on it this WednesdayCORRECTION: No Council Vote is planned right now.

What was revealed last week are the terms of the proposed disposition of the property to the Argos Group. The most salient provision is the proposed purchase price: $1.3 million.

As GM discussed a little while back, that purchase price was likely going to have to thread a couple of tight needles. Make it too high and the only way the developer can afford to recoup its costs to rehab the building is for it to build either too many apartments (as far as the neighbors are concerned, at least) or build the apartments too expensive to sell. Make it too low and you risk giving away a valuable publicly owned property for peanuts. Plus the developer may just go ahead and build too many apartments regardless. Continue reading
