ANC Preview: Ugh Edition
The September ANC meeting is always a slog. The commission takes August off, so a whole second month’s worth of projects backs up waiting for review. Thus next Monday’s meeting is not for the faint of heart.
But the one upside of so many projects is that there are some interesting topics. Let’s dive in:
Morso’s Long Shot
Apparently Morso Restaurant at 3277 M St. is applying for a permit to allow sidewalk tables and chairs. There is no way there’s enough space on the sidewalk for tables and chairs on M St. Curiously, the agenda discusses “sidewalk tables and chairs on Prospect Street at the side of Moreso.” GM guesses that it’s supposed to say “Potomac St.” since the east side of Morso faces Potomac St. Nonetheless, given the battle that Potomac St. residents waged on Philly Pizza, GM suspects they may have something to say about a new sidewalk cafe. GM hopes something can be worked out. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- The Georgetown Current reported that the kindergarten class at Hyde is up 45% this year due to increased neighborhood interest.
- Would you pay more to have a business near where a tourist mecca used to be?

New Jelleff Field Complete
The final touches are being applied to the brand new artificial turf field at Jelleff. It appears that it will be open in time for the fall sports season.
From the photo above, you can see several features of the new field. First of all, it’s got lines for at least four different field arrangements: baseball (in red), lacrosse (yellow), soccer (white), and another smaller soccer field (blue). It makes for a confusing jumble of lines, but representatives from Stoddert Soccer assure GM that that’s no big deal.
Another significant feature is the giant fence. It is huge. But in all honesty, it is inconspicuous and not nearly as ugly as GM feared. Continue reading

- You have till 5:00 today to file a petition to appear on the general election ballot, if you feel like making an independent bid for Mayor or Councilmember. If you’re thinking about running for ANC, you have another week.

Circulator Takes Over for the Blue Bus Next Sunday
GM mentioned yesterday that in September the Circulator will take over the remaining Blue bus route between Dupont and Rosslyn. He learned yesterday that that the start date is a tad sooner: next Sunday.
As you can see from the above map, the new Circulator route is identical to the Blue Bus. What will be different are the rates: normal fare will still be a buck, but you won’t get a 50 cent discount for showing a Smartrip. Although, you will get to pay with a Smartrip, which is probably worth 50 cents.
So, that means the last call for the Blue Bus will be sometime around 2 AM Sunday morning. By the next morning, Georgetown’s Circulator service will double.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- ANC rep Bill Starrels getting complaints about the Georgetown Cupcake line.
- Unfortunately, we made it onto a Tea Party-approved list of places to avoid scary people. (It’s probably not worth mentioning that we’re not really that different, crime-wise, than neighborhoods like Dupont or Columbia Heights).

Georgetown Fall Preview
GM got back from his week off last night, and while the summer still has a few weeks left in it, with the beach behind him and schools open today GM’s views inevitably turn towards the fall. Although it’s ecologically a season of decay, here in Georgetown it will be a season of renewal. Below, Gm takes a look at the projects definitely likely to come on-line this fall and those that might.
The Definite:
- Georgetown Library – This October, Georgetown’s historic library will be reborn. After a devastating fire in 2007, the library was rebuilt better than it was before.
- New Circulator route – It was just last fall that Georgetown was fighting to keep our current Circulator route. After a huge grassroots effort (and the intervention of Jack Evans) the old route was saved. Better still, the last Blue bus route will be turned into a new Circulator route. The route is scheduled to start up in September, although you sure wouldn’t know it from the Circulator’s website.
- Capital Bikeshare – In another September transportation innovation, four Capital Bikeshare stations will be setting up in Georgetown. GM has already signed up, have you?
- National Pinball Museum – This self-evidently awesome museum is supposed to be opening up in the Georgetown mall this fall.
