Not So Long Ago: Wisconsin and Q

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week on not so long ago, GM visits just one small storefront in the upper Wisconsin Ave. stretch. Nowadays it houses Rooms With a View, a homewares shop. Eighteen years ago it housed Hatum Valet.

Hatum Valet was a dry cleaner/cobbler. It appears that at some point Hatum Valet moved up to 1800 Wisconsin and changed its name to Sky Valet (or Sky Shoes). The new shop seems to have become really more of a straight shoe store, whereas Hatum Valet was really more of a shoe repairer.

What’s also interesting about comparing the two shots is just how much ivy has grown on the adjacent buildings since 1993. Actually, the ivy (and Rooms with a View) was already there in 2004, according to this DDOT photo:

That stuff can be murder on siding. GM hopes the owners are checking for leaks! Continue reading

Loews Georgetown to Add IMAX

GM learned the other day that Loews Georgetown is going to add IMAX capabilities. In case it’s been a while since you’ve visited an aquarium or science museum: IMAX is a special type of film where the frame size is significantly larger than the standard film. Traditional movies are filmed and projected with 35mm film; IMAX uses 77mm film. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s really significant.

Normally IMAX theaters are laid out quite differently than a normal theater. They have much bigger screens and the seats are on a steep grade, like the upper deck of a baseball stadium. GM’s not sure if the changes at the Georgetown theater will require dramatic construction. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • A lot of the “date rape” drug was just delivered to the name and address of an ex-Georgetown student. Frequently fake names are used by drug smugglers to avoid the cops.
  • On a cheerier note: Don’t forget the massive water balloon fight at the waterfront on Sunday!

We’re Gonna Need Some Dentists

According to Google, there’s not a single dentist’s office in Georgetown. This might need to change. Why? Because Georgetown is becoming one giant purveyor of sweets.

GM has noted in the past that once the second IceBerry opens up on Wisconsin, the only dessert desert will be filled in. When you’re anywhere on Wisconsin or M, you’ll be no more than a block and a half away from ice cream. Continue reading

ANC Redistricting Ahead?

In April, GM forecasted the possible changes to the ANC boundaries that could come as a result of the redistricting process now underway. Well, yesterday the Subcommittee on Redistricting issued guidelines for ANC and SMD redistricting that put more meat on the bones and can start to color in what changes Georgetown could see.

According to the guidelines, each SMD (that’s single member district, or practically speaking the district of each commissioner) ideally must contain 2,000 residents. The SMDs can vary from this ideal measure by 100 residents in either direction. So in other words, each SMD must have between 1,900 and 2,100 residents.

By GM’s calculations, after the last Census, the SMD populations stack up like this:

  • SMD 1 – 2449
  • SMD 2 – 1919
  • SMD 3 – 2037
  • SMD 4 – 3102
  • SMD 5 – 2529
  • SMD 6 – 2308
  • SMD 7 – 2122

Note, SMDs 3 and 1 include several GU dorms, but there is no Census data broken out by dorm. So GM used the dorms’ capacities, which is actually how they did in ten years ago. Continue reading
