ANC Preview: Hyde Gym Edition

The ANC will meet next Monday for its June session. It will take place at its normal place and time: Visitation at 6:00 pm.

Two potentially interesting items are near the top of the agenda, both relating to schools.

First, the ANC will discuss the plans to add a new addition to Hyde-Addison. Right now, the kids take most of their gym classes on the playground. The kids really enjoy this, but when the weather is too cold or wet to go outside, they only have a hallway in which to play.

Plans have been gestating for a while in the school to add a new building to the complex to finally provide a gym. The most likely plan would call for the new building to be built where the parking lot is now. Parking would be moved underground.

GM has learned that there’s actually money in place for this project and it could be underway relatively soon. Anyone who has seen the beautiful additions to schools like Janney and Stoddert has reason to be hopeful that the Hyde addition would be a wonderful addition to the school and drive up local interest even more.

On the other end of the school spectrum, the ANC will also be giving an update on the GU campus plan. As they announced a while back, the ANC and other parties to the Zoning Hearing are in mediation right now trying to come up with a negotiated settlement. GM doubts the ANC will have any earth-shattering announcement, but you may be able to read the tea leaves.

I actually wonder as families move back into the city requiring schools – that we won’t look back and wish we hadn’t sold off our boarded up schools for condos, etc. I am curious if anyone sees a potential overcrowding situation at the Georgetown public schools – or is that still a long way off?

That’s a very interesting question without a simple answer. On the District-wide scale, there is, if anything, more capacity than needed. But on the school-by-school level there are definitely areas of overcapacity. For instance, Janney built a huge addition and they’re already straining for space. Other Ward 3 elementary schools are similarly full. But schools east of the park are not full and are still being targeted for closure. The problem is that there is not enough capacity in the best schools. And often what makes schools the “best” (or at least perceived as the best) is the very fact that they’re over capacity with children of higher SES. So in some ways, overcrowding is both a problem and a solution.

As for Georgetown specifically, we once had 8 different elementary schools. One was demolished (the beautiful Curtis school which stood where the playground is), two have been converted to condos (Wormley and Phillips), one was converted to commercial office space (Corcoran), one is part of an art school (Fillmore, which is confusingly owned by Corcoran), one is artists studios but still owned by the city (Jackson), and two are still a school (Hyde and Addison). It is highly unlikely that Georgetown will grow in public school population enought that Hyde-Addison plus an extension won’t satisfy local demand. If it really came to that, potentially the Jackson School could be converted back to use, but that’s unlikely.

The population of Georgetown just is unlikely to get back to the level of density that led to the construction of 8 elementary schools. And in a way, it never had enough density to justify it. The awful policy of segregation led to the over building. Corcoran and Phillips didn’t need to be built as two schools but for the fact that one needed to serve the white kids and the other the black.
