GM has learned that Spanish clothes-maker Massimo Dutti is planning to open up in Georgetown. As far as GM can determine, this would only be the second American branch for the European chain.

They are owned by the same parent company as Zara, but they seem to be on the higher end. This would be consistent with GM’s observation that Georgetown’s clothing stores are trending upwards in target market. It’s not Madison Avenue yet, but it’s a lot less dowdy than it used to be.

The store will open up where the American Eagle Outfitters used to be.

Over the last couple weekends, GM has been awfully tempted to jump the Volta Park pool fence for a dip. But thankfully, starting this weekend such trespassing will no longer be necessary! The public pools open up for the season.

The pools will only be open for the weekends until school is out June 18th. Then they’ll be open on the weekdays at various times.

Here’s the schedules for Georgetown pools:

• Volta Park: Sat and Sunday 12-6, Tuesday through Friday (after June 18th) 4:30-8:00, closed Mondays.
• Jelleff Pool: Sat and Sunday 12-6, Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Friday 8:00 am-8:00 pm, closed Wednesday

These would be new times for both pools. Volta Park is losing its weekday afternoon hours and Jelleff is getting greatly expanded hours. GM will try to confirm if these are in fact the new hours.

Last November, GM moved into a new home that has an alley behind it. He quickly realized that the alley lights (one of which is shown above) get awfully bright and glaring at night.

As you can see from the photo, the light had a glass “bulb” that hung below the hood. It lit up fully, so it gave the effect of a hanging bare light bulb in an otherwise unlit room.

GM was resigned to just live with the nightly glare, but then he heard at the most recent ANC that if you are unhappy with your streetlights, DDOT will attempt to mitigate the glare. So GM wrote Ron Lewis, his commissioner, and about a week later brand new lights were installed:

The new lights actually make the alley itself brighter, but without the exposed glass “bulb” the light is more directed downward rather than sideways. It still creates a less than romantic atmosphere in the garden, but the glare into the house itself is significantly reduced.

So let it be known: if your alley lights are glaring into your bedroom at night, give your commissioner a call!
