Georgetown Temporary Library to Close This Saturday, New Library Opens October 18th

This Saturday, the temporary library on M St. that has served Georgetown while the historic library is repaired, will close. The newly refurbished historic library will open October 18th.

GM heard an intriguing rumor the other day that East Banc, the building owner of the temporary space, offered to extend the temporary library’s lease rent free. The idea would be to create a satellite library for lower Georgetown. Considering that Book Hill is is so high up Georgetown, this would be a boon to lower Georgetown. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • The Georgetown library will open on October 18th. Huzzah.
  • A new Georgetown blog is on the scene: the Georgetown Patch. So far there’s an excellent article on Hardy. GM welcomes them and hopes they keep up the good work.
  • O st. and P st. construction to start up in November.

Georgetown Fall Preview

GM got back from his week off last night, and while the summer still has a few weeks left in it, with the beach behind him and schools open today GM’s views inevitably turn towards the fall. Although it’s ecologically a season of decay, here in Georgetown it will be a season of renewal. Below, Gm takes a look at the projects definitely likely to come on-line this fall and those that might.

The Definite:

  • Georgetown Library – This October, Georgetown’s historic library will be reborn. After a devastating fire in 2007, the library was rebuilt better than it was before.
  • New Circulator route – It was just last fall that Georgetown was fighting to keep our current Circulator route. After a huge grassroots effort (and the intervention of Jack Evans) the old route was saved. Better still, the last Blue bus route will be turned into a new Circulator route. The route is scheduled to start up in September, although you sure wouldn’t know it from the Circulator’s website.
  • Capital Bikeshare – In another September transportation innovation, four Capital Bikeshare stations will be setting up in Georgetown. GM has already signed up, have you?
  • National Pinball Museum – This self-evidently awesome museum is supposed to be opening up in the Georgetown mall this fall.

Georgetown Library to Reopen in October

In reporting the other day that the Georgetown Library cupola was restored, GM stated that the library was targeted for a September reopening. Turns out that was a bit premature. He was contacted by a representative of the DC Public Libraries to inform him that the target month for reopening is October.

GM thought he’d take this errata opportunity to republish his piece from last year describing what’s in store for Georgetown’s newly renovated gem: Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GM doesn’t ordinarily like to report on sightings at Cafe Milano, but he’ll make an exception to pass on the story of Christopher Hitchens and Christopher Buckley once sitting down for lunch at Cafe Milano and only leaving at midnight. Quoth Buckley: “I happily would have checked into Georgetown Hospital…He probably went home and wrote a biography of George Orwell. He has not a wooden leg, but a wooden torso.”
  • Georgetown Library safe from budget cuts.
