Georgetown Library to Reopen in October

In reporting the other day that the Georgetown Library cupola was restored, GM stated that the library was targeted for a September reopening. Turns out that was a bit premature. He was contacted by a representative of the DC Public Libraries to inform him that the target month for reopening is October.

This week, the historic cupola of the Georgetown Public Library was finished and installed by HRGH Corp. The original cupola was destroyed in the 2007 fire:

  • GM doesn’t ordinarily like to report on sightings at Cafe Milano, but he’ll make an exception to pass on the story of Christopher Hitchens and Christopher Buckley once sitting down for lunch at Cafe Milano and only leaving at midnight. Quoth Buckley: “I happily would have checked into Georgetown Hospital…He probably went home and wrote a biography of George Orwell. He has not a wooden leg, but a wooden torso.”
  • Georgetown Library safe from budget cuts.

  • Construction crews were installing steel trusses for the new library roof this weekend. It’s good to finally see so much progress being made.
  • Peggy Cooper Caffritz none too pleased about the possibility of the Duke Ellington School moving. (Although for the record Bill Turque, the school is in Burleith not Georgetown).
  • Haiti benefit party this Friday night above Lululemon.

Georgetown Library Plans

Lobby for New Georgetown Libary

GM was alerted by DCist and We Love DC that the plans for the renovated Georgetown library are available online. GM saw them from afar briefly during an ANC meeting last winter, but it’s nice to see them up-close without having to sit through two hours of applications to replace old windows.

Above is an image of the new library’s lobby. It will retain a lot of the traditional feel of the old library, but will open up the space considerably. After the jump, more of the images:
