About Your Tax Bill…
Last week the Washington City Paper published the neighborhood-by-neighborhood map of how residential real estate assessments rose or fell from 2008 to 2009. It came as no big surprise to GM that Georgetown’s numbers were down. Specifically, the total assessment of Georgetown residential property fell from $3,743,858,260 to $3,666,092,440, a 2.08% drop.
So does that mean Georgetowners can expect a lower tax bill next year?

Casa Stephanopoulos Under Contract

As reported here in January, the Stephanopouli are leaving Georgetown and put their 31st St. manse up for sale. Well it appears that it is now under contract. It was listed for $6.35 million, but GM guessed it would sell for $5.67 million. What do you think the final number will be?

ANC Round Up: Jack Evans Edition
Last night ANC2E met for its March session. While GM wasn’t too hopeful for an interesting meeting, he really ought to know by now that it doesn’t take an exciting agenda to have a noteworthy meeting. On top of the list of items worth noting was an extended riff by Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans.
Jack Speaks
Councilmember Jack Evans made his semi-annual trip to ANC2E. He started out giving a stump speech on the state of the District’s finances. But from there he really just went off in a bunch of directions. For the sake of brevity, GM is just going to list the real choice quotations:
- “The District of Columbia remains one of the strongest financial entities in America, state, county, or city. Our management of our finances since the Control Board Era, 1995 and 1996 to the present, has really been astute.” (Keep in mind that Evans has been the Chair of the Finance Committee for much of that time.)
- “My goal as a resident of Georgetown has always been to improve the infrastructure of Georgetown. When I first moved here back in 1994, Georgetown was a wreck.”
- “I always think it’s a bad decision when you are starting to run deficits in your government to raise taxes to cover them because it is a short term fix for a long term problem…The only way to deal with it is to get to the structure problem, you’re spending too much money…You can never raise taxes in a recessionary environment.” (Proving once again that this isn’t really a one party town; We’ve got Republicans in office, they just call themselves Democrats). Student Group Aims to Encourage More Solar Panel Use
Last week, GM previewed tonight’s ANC meeting. One of the items is a presentation on the topic of solar energy by some group labeled Georgetown Energy. A Google search didn’t come up with an answer what exactly this group is. But hanging off the doorknobs of Georgetown yesterday was the answer. Georgetown Energy is a group of G.U. students who are committed to encouraging more solar panel use by area residents.
The website provides a couple handy guides such as one on the merits of installing solar panels. The group uses as a model a coop that was created in Mount Pleasant. But how likely is it that solar panels can find much of a home in Georgetown? Continue reading
