ANC Preview: Ah, That’s Better Edition
Since the Old Georgetown Board doesn’t meet in August, projects get backed up for approval for September. As a result, the September ANC meeting is absolute torture. But thankfully September is behind us, and the October meeting next Monday looks downright brief. Check out the more interesting topics:
Tudor Place
Tudor Place is planning a large construction project. They want to clear out all administrative uses from the main building and restore it entirely to its historical shape.
To accommodate this, Tudor Place wants to build climate controlled space for its large collection of documents and artifacts from the house. It also wants to build a new gatehouse and an educational center.
The neighbors are objecting to the proposed construction, mostly because of its effect on 32nd St. residents (the idea being that the new buildings would loom too much over the neighbors). They would like to see less construction above ground and more below ground space. CAG has said it won’t support the plan as it currently exists (Full disclosure: GM is on the CAG Historical Preservation Committee that voted on the resolution.)
With the neighbors and CAG in lockstep opposition to the plan, it seems likely that the ANC will object as well. But it should make for a fun discussion. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- New restaurant with funny name just opened on lower Wisconsin.
- Mayor-to-be shows Georgetown what exactly hand dancing is (GM keeps thinking it’s what Tiffany was doing back in the 80s).

Wisconsin Ave. Needs a Major Overhaul
Does anyone actually like Wisconsin Ave.? Whether you’re walking on it, biking on it, driving on it, it’s almost guaranteed to be an unpleasant experience.
But it doesn’t have to be that way, particularly for pedestrians. Some simple changes to the way Wisconsin Ave. is shaped could dramatically improve the pedestrian experience, without significant affecting the traffic flow. These changes could even add parking.
Impossible you say? Not at all. Follow GM as he takes a stroll down Wisconsin Ave. highlighting where the worst problems are, and how to fix them:
Between R and Reservoir:
Let’s start at R St. and head south. Looking down the street, what do we see?
A dragstrip, that’s what. From R down to Reservoir, Wisconsin Ave. is a wide two lane road. There is parking on the west side, but it is not frequently occupied. Due to the fact that this is a long stretch of road and downhill, cars drive way too fast on it.
Solutions: This road is way too wide. When drivers drive on wide roads, they drive faster than if the same road were narrower. Since parking is not scarce on this stretch, we ought to install one or two bulb-outs from the west sidewalk. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- If the ambulance asks, maybe you should tell them to go to Foggy Bottom instead.
- Listen, GM gets criticized for being too hard on Georgetown Cupcake sometimes. Fair enough, but stuff like this is why he’s a bit ambivalent over the store’s success.
- Final reminder: If you’re around at lunchtime, head over to the Ritz for a Q&A with your next mayor.

Georgetowners Owe Almost $1 Million in Back Taxes
The District Office of Tax and Revenue auctioned off the tax liens on 2,717 properties last week (only 1,265 were actually sold). Of those 2,717 properties, 86 are in Georgetown. The combined back taxes owed on those properties is $919,401.79.
The average owed on each property was $10,690.72. The largest tax bill is owed for 1344 Wisconsin Ave., which housed Gala until it closed last year (which might explain the tax bill).
Here’s the complete list of delinquent properties (eyeballing it looks like they are mostly commercial properties): Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Hey, you’re going to have a new mayor in a few months. Come listen to what he has to say about Georgetown at the next Q&A Cafe on Wednesday.
- Georgetowner Herb Miller wants a gig as the Deputy Mayor of Planning and Urban Development in the Gray administration. In related news, a fox wants to take over the job of watching the hen-house. (Seriously though, the two largest projects Miller gave to Georgetown are the mall and the waterfront complex. GM thinks the neighborhood would be a lot better without both.)
