Not So Long Ago: Wisconsin and P

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week on Not So Long Ago, GM heads up Wisconsin Ave. a smidge to the late great Commander Salamander. The space is sadly empty, but from 1979 until the end of 2010, Commander Salamander was a favorite of DC-area teens looking to break the mold (or at least, jump into another less common mold).

The 1993 picture shows Commander Salamander about halfway through its life. What GM didn’t realize is that Commander Salamander used to occupy only half the space. The other half was occupied by a store called Bootlegger. It was apparently a shoe store and was open as late as 1998. GM’s not sure when it closed. Continue reading

ANC Preview: Georgetown Gets More Britisher Edition

Union Jack by Iker Merodio.

Next tuesday, the ANC will be meeting for its June session. Note the shift from the normal Monday spot in order to avoid making people choose between civics and Memorial Day barbecues. It will be at the normal time and place, though, which is 6:30 at Visitation.

The agenda’s a full one, but one relatively small item jumped right out at GM. Apparently the British clothing store Jack Wills is planning on moving in where the O Salon used to be (just south of M on Wisconsin). This is the third highish-end British clothier to move into Georgetown in the last year or so. The others are Barbour–which is open–and All Saints–which is opening soon. Add to that Brooks Brothers, which is about the most Anglophilic of American stores, an a full-blown British invasion. Continue reading

Google Adds Bus Stop Info to Maps

About two weeks ago, Google finally added WMATA transit information to its DC map. So now you can quickly find out how to get from Point A to Point B in the District using the bus and/or metro.

One of the side-benefits to this improvement is that Google maps now shows where all the bus stops are. As you can see above, there are a lot of them in Georgetown. Unfortunately, if you click on the the little icons for each stop, it doesn’t give you any information other than the name of the stop. It would be nice if it were to at least tell you what bus-lines service the stop and where they go. But it’s still nice to be able to quickly locate where a stop specifically is if you only know generally where one is. Continue reading

Z-Burger May Be Coming To Georgetown

GM heard a an interesting rumor the other day. Apparently, Z-Burger is planning on moving in to Georgetown. He tried to confirm, but didn’t hear back. Nonetheless, the rumor sounded pretty reliable so GM is passing it on.

Z-Burger is a DC-based burger joint with two locations on Wisconsin Ave. (one in Glover Park, the other in Tenleytown). The Georgetown location would also be on Wisconsin, according to what GM heard. It would takeover the space currently housing Aashik at 1424 Wisconsin Ave.

If this turns out to be true, it would be emblematic of two changes creeping through the neighborhood. The first is obvious: we’ve got a lot of burger joints. Five Guys replaced Au Pied Cochon about 5 years ago, News Cafe turned into Thunder Burger, Bill’s Burgers is supposed to take over the old Cheesesteak Factory, and of course we’ve got old standbys like Wingos.
