okay, I’ll bite. Great picture, but I long for the day when these relics are out of the passable streets. They’re a significant danger, notwithstanding their “charm” if you’re walking along the street. If residents are concerned about speed, we could put in speed bumps.
Are you talking about the streetcar tracks or the cobblestones?
Most of the neighbors want to get rid of the tracks (I’m not sure about their opinions on the cobblestones). The government wants to get rid of them too but apparently there’s this one neighbor who will likely sue the government if they decide to take them out. It’s weird.
They apparently are working on some solution, but it’s not clear what that is.
I’m a huge streetcar fan, so I’d prefer the tracks stay there and somehow be made safer. But the neighbors are justifiably concerned about the safety of the tracks. As the cobble stone settle more and more, the tracks are more dangerous.
As for the cobblestones, I really hope they stay. Moreover, I wish DDOT would put them back in on a lot of our side streets (I wrote about that a while back). They slow cars down significantly for the entire stretch of the road. Speed bumps are ugly and only slow cars down for a few feet.
I went to a neighborhood meeting at St. Johns (I think) last year about the situation (I live at the 3300 Block of O). At that time the city said that the plan was to remove the tracks and cobblestones to repair the sinkholes underneath the street (not sure if P Street also has that problem). Once the repairs were made, they were going to put back (I’m not making this up) the tracks AND the cobblestones, but make sure they’re all at the same grade so to prevent accidents and injuries. Like I said – that was either last year or two years ago – so the plans may have changed since then.
I had understood that some of the neighbors wanted things to remain as is to keep traffic slower. I could be misinformed. I also had understood news reports last year to say that the street would be reconstructed without any cobblestones or tracks.
The danger right now is that your car can get pulled from one side to the other rather quickly. Say you’re going 10 mph, and you’re traveling on the left side to avoid someone exiting a vehicle on the right. You hit a hole and your car can suddenly be pulled to the right because of the combination of the hole and the tracks. I’ve seen more than a few people have to scatter to avoid being hit, and not by people driving too fast.
Ron Lewis announced at the December ANC that they’re working on some new plan that is different than the ones they’ve floated before. No word when that will be announced.
