The Morning Metropolitan

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GM saw that the Georgetown Candy Bar is closing. This is a bummer. Georgetown certainly has more than enough places to ruin your teeth, but a good old fashioned candy store added a nice variety.
  • Former sous chef of Equinox will reopen Mendocino as “Unum” (as in “E Pluribis Unum”). It will feature contemporary American fare.

Georgetown Candy Bar is a rip-off of Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York, in every possible way. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are closing under the threat of a lawsuit.

Other than the name, how did Georgetown Candy Bar resemble Dylan’s anymore than it resembled just about any run-of-the-mill candy store?

  3. I always felt like the Georgetown Candy Bar was awash in unfulfilled potential. They had some decent candy, and good service (and their balloon/party side business was a nice touch, albeit a few months in) but they didn’t maximize their space in the slightest.

With slightly different organization, they could have packed double the types of candy into the same amount of shelf-space, and become a real hub for people searching out long-forgotten favorites, or wanting to try something new.

I’ve never been to Dylan’s Candy Bar, but Wythe in Williamsburg, VA, and For The Love of Chocolate in Richmond are two phenomenal examples of candy shops that are destinations for those who are sweet-tooth inclined. They both have more real estate to deal with, but they each maximize every square foot they have.
