The Morning Metropolitan

Water St.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • NPS has awarded the Jack’s Boathouse concession to a Massachusetts-based company called B&G Outdoor Recreation. The current owner of Jack’s, Paul Simkin, has called this move illegal and promises to fight it. On a side note, let GM say that he was totally wrong when he said that he believed that NPS was going to give the contract to Guest Services International. Maybe the pressure from local groups made a difference?
  • The Washington Harbour ice rink closed for the season yesterday. Let’s give MRP a round of applause for a great addition to the community!

I do applaud the ice rink, but isn’t that a few weeks early? Especially since we finally have snow on the way. I’m sure they have reasons, but waiting till 3/21 would have been nice…on the ice.

I suspect it has something to do with them getting the fountain back in order in time for the spring. But, I agree a few more weeks of skating would be nice.

  3. I am so grateful for the ice rink, it has been a wonderful addition to the community. I don’t even ice skate, myself, but have gone over there a number of times this winter with friends to sit outside and have drinks, and enjoy the music and watching the skaters. It’s been a great addition to the village.

I think we will have a better sense of the seasonal period for the rink once we see how long it takes to dismantle it, and get the fountain working. My guess is that most of the rink’s pieces will be carefully disassembled and stored, otherwise the cost of building a new rink every year will be prohibitive.
