Today the Georgetown Current reported on a community meeting last week on impending construction on Que St. between Dumbarton Bridge and 27th St. Anyone who remembers the “Georgetown Project” will surely not look forward to this.
Apparently the District Water and Sewer Authority needs to install separate sewers for storm water and wastewater across the city. As it is, when it rains really hard wastewater gets directed into our sewer water, which is then dumped into the Potomac, Rock Creek, and the Anacostia. This is why it is a particularly bad idea to go swimming in the Potomac after a heavy rain storm (it’s always at least a kind of bad idea).
One of the affected sewer drain spouts is under the Dumbarton Bridge, so Que Street will undergo a ton of construction to separate out the lines. At the community meeting (and GM apologizes for not going, it’s the sort of thing he ought to go to, but he never heard about it) the city present three possible traffic flow options for the construction period. They are:
- Just shut down Que St. totally for 4-6 months
- Keep open only one eastbound lane during the day and close it at night, total construction time 6-8 months
- Keep one lane open during the day but allow traffic both ways with flaggers directing traffic, both lanes open at night, total construction time one year
As a rider of Que St. buses, GM dreads this construction. Of these bad options, GM would pick the first option, just to get it over with the fastest. What do you think?

Ouch, that is going to be a nightmare.
