This mugging got GM thinking: is there an uptick in muggings this year? According to MPD, it doesn’t look like it. There have been 21 robberies so far this year, only 8 of which were in the residential areas (i.e., not on M, Wisconsin, or K). At this point last year there were 19 muggings, 12 of which were in the residential areas. It seems as if we get hit on average with about 4 muggings a month, 2 of which happen in the residential areas. Although it’s GM’s impression that they seem to come in spurts.
What do you think? Is crime going up or down, or is it staying level?

I remember walking around residential Georgetown one Christmas Eve on my way to a midnight service and thought with the trees blocking the street lights, and several dark parts, “this is a great place to get mugged.” But, G’town has that reputation for being safe so my fear senses weren’t super heightened. But living in a section of NW where muggings are a bit more expected, I noticed that there are some ingredients for street crime.
I’m especially wary when I walk on some of Georgetown’s side streets. I often make haste to get on M Street at night when traveling from Georgetown University to Foggy Bottom.
