Take a Ride on the Old Route 20

GM noticed this nice piece by Jerry McCoy about a new donation to the Peabody Collection. It’s a sign from the still standing streetcar trestle over the Glover Archbold Park (which still stands). Jerry took the opportunity to link to an old movie showing a ride out the old Route 20 streetcar route that went from Union Station through Georgetown out to Glen Echo (and on to Cabin John, although the cameraman gets off at Glen Echo).

[Update: GM had included a quote from a personal memoir about the old Cabin John trolley. However, he did not realize that the source of the memoir was a Holocaust denial organization. GM has removed the selection and apologizes for the inappropriate inclusion]

As far as GM understands, the right-of-way for the trolley still exists. Maybe someday we can rebuild the route?

  1. Great post. Very relevant given events of the last 24 hours regarding the streetcar at Glen Echo Park, which I had just posted about on my blog. Fortunately, this sign is being preserved unlike the trolley that was hauled away yesterday. Had just expressed the same support for restarting the streetcar line in my post, and then I read this! Maybe we can get some momentum going on it. BTW, the right of way is still there all the way from Georgetown to Glen Echo.

You’re aware that the Institute for Historical Review (linked to above) exists to disseminate Holocaust denial literature, right? Might want to include the quote w/out feeding them Web traffic.

    Rock Creek,
Unfortunately I did not realize that that was the source of the memoir. I’ve removed the whole thing because I don’t even want to quote from such an organization. Thanks for the heads up.

I remember taking that streetcar out to Glen Echo as a child – it kind of dates me, doesn’t it? 🙂
