The towers of Old North were added some years after the building was completed in 1795. They are not ornamental, but were built to provide extra structural bracing due to the stress caused by heavy vibrations when cannons were test-fired at Henry Foxall’s (sic) foundry, located near the mouth of Foundry Branch. When Old North was still a dormitory, the two tower rooms were much sought after: they were “duplex” suites, with study space one level and sleeping quarters located above.
