In 1972, Hurricane Agnes brought the river up across K Street/Water Street and even climbed the Wisconsin Avenue hill a foot or two. I remember that Chadwicks was heavily sandbagged, but between the street and river, as I recall, there there were only Galliher’s lumber and a sand and gravel business. No great loss there. Rock Creek was more seriously affected: the water level rose so quickly that motorists scrambled to escape their cars and climb the banks to safety. The old Washington Daily News carried a front-page photo taken probably from the M Street Bridge looking north — it showed the entire creek basin, including all four lanes of the parkway, covered in about three to four feet of rushing water.
