Two years in a row and two huge elms have been struck with disease and needed to be cut down near the corner of Q and 30th. GM is particularly worried about the next one down the line: the huge elm on the northwest corner of 30th and Q. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful trees in Georgetown. Let’s hope the disease was halted!

No “cure” for Dutch Elm disease has been found. For the past 40 years, Zelcova have been widely planted in Washington as a “street tree” elm replacement; see especially Independence Avenue SW between 23rd Street and 15th Street. Now, however, several varieties of blight-resistant elms have been developed and are being planted. The Valley Forge elm was developed in this area by the Agriculture Department’s Agricultural Research Service, and is planted at the National Arboretum on New York Avenue.
