Georgetown Theater Sign off to the Shop

John Hlinko passed on the above photo to GM yesterday. It shows the workers taking away the iconic Georgetown neon sign. As GM mentioned Monday, the new owner of the property, local architect Robert Bell, is having the sign repaired by Jack Stone Signs, the exact same company that manufactured the sign originally in the 1950s.

So say good-bye to the decrepit and rusting neon sign. The next time you’ll see it, it’ll be good as new. Probably the last time it looked so good is when it had a cameo in St. Elmo’s Fire:

(Speaking of which, you can catch a showing of St. Elmo’s Fire in the bar that inspired it, The Tombs, next Monday.)

From plans GM has seen, the blue paint on the sign will be replaced with the original black paint.

For many years, the decay of the sign has been both a favorite of photographers and an emblem for Wisconsin Ave. Once restored, GM believe it will continue to be popular with photographers, but only because it will quickly replace the Riggs Bank dome as the iconic image for Georgetown. Whether it will be an emblem for Wisconsin Ave.’s rebirth is still to be seen.
