Now and a Long Time Ago: Canal

Canal Postcard

Today on Now and a Long Time Ago, GM found a postcard on Ebay showing the canal early in the 20th century. It shows the Wisconsin Ave. bridge (supposedly the oldest bridge in the District) from 31st St.

The card itself was sent Christmas Day in 1911. Here’s what the sender wrote:

Hello Shortie! (sp?)

I heard that you was going to wait a long time to answer I [unclear] Washington having a good time don’t know when I will get home before so long I guess.

From Frathie (sp?)

It’s addressed to Miss Barbara Cave in Mount Sydney, Virginia. According to census records, there was a Barbara C. Cave who lived in Mount Sidney, Virginia (which is in Augusta, Virginia, just west of Charlottesville). She was born in 1889 to David and Sophia Cave. Sadly, she died in 1931 at the age of 42:
