This week for Now and a Long Time Ago, GM is stopping by the old Western High School, which is now the Duke Ellington School for the Arts.
There’s not a ton different on the 35th St. facade from how it was when this postcard was made (probably in the early 20th century). GM just thought you’d like to be reminded of what it looked like to have an open and functional school at that location, as opposed to the gigantic money pit that currently occupies the space.
Western High School operated in this building from 1897 until 1977, when Duke Ellington School fully took over the building. It has a long list of notable alumni, including Gloria Steinhem and David Scott, who walked on the moon.
