The principal advantage to “streateries,” especially on major thoroughfares like M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, is that they improve restaurateurs’ profit margins. With auto noise, pollution, and the threat of out-of-control cars, they are not particularly attractive, comfortable, or safe places to take a meal. They also usurp space that could be used as bike lanes, or, in Georgetown, where sidewalks are narrow, these spaces could would provide a major improvement to the pedestrian experience.
