Easter Bunny Cometh

Easter is right around the corner. And Georgetown offers plenty of chances to celeggbrate with a good old fashioned Easter egg hunt.

The newest entrant into the eggstakes is Evermay. The S & R Foundation, which now owns the estate, is hosting an egg hunt Saturday March 30th at 2 pm. Tickets are $15 per adult and $5 per child. Buy your tickets here.

Another r-egg-latively new event is the Rose Park egg hunt, also on March 30th, but from 10 AM to 12 PM. This eggstravaganza will feature two life-size bunny rabbits, face painting, cotton candy, sno-cones, games and prizes. R-egg-ister here. Continue reading

Come Out to Learn About Georgetown During the Civil War

CAG is hosting a fascinating lecture next week to discuss Georgetown during the Civil War. It’s a topic GM has only touched on briefly (for instance discussing the military hospital, seen above, which is now an apartment building on 30th).

On Tuesday at the Four Seasons at 7:00, Leslie Buhler of Tudor Place will be discussing the Civil War and how it played out in our neighborhood.

Seating is limited, so make sure to RSVP to cagmail@cagtown.org.

Annual Rites of Spring Right Around the Corner

It’s easy to forget on a chilly first of March, but spring is right around the corner. And spring in Georgetown carries with it several annual rites. It’s not too early to start looking forward to them.

The Georgetown House Tour

First of the two grand dame tours, the Georgetown house tour will be held this year on April 27th. It is held every year to benefit St. John’s Episcopal church. As the title states, this tour gives you a chance to walk through 8-10 of Georgetown’s nicest homes. The patrons party is always the place to hobnob with the nobbiest hobs.

The Georgetown Garden Tour

Of the two tours, the Garden Tour is probably GM’s favorite. Like the house tour, you get a chance to look behind the gates of 8 or so homes, but GM just thinks there’s something more interesting about gardens than interiors. This tour will be held on May 11th, and is run by the Georgetown Garden Club. Continue reading

A Chance to Pretend to be Crazy Rich

DSC_0574

As you may recall, in 2011 local scientists/insanely rich couple Sachiko Kuno and Ryuji Ueno bought the historic estates of Evermay and Halcyon House. Their purchases has proven to be a boon to community. Through their charitable organization, the S & R Foundation, the couple has regularly flung open the gates of Evermay and hosted a fantastic music series.

The spring season was recently announced (the schedule is below). These concerts offer a wonderful opportunity to explore this beautiful property, take in some fabulous music, and pretend (at least for a little bit) that you too are insanely wealthy. Continue reading

Like Poker? Like a Good Cause?

GM doesn’t normally pass on many requests he gets to promote charities. So many of them end up in his in box, and GM doesn’t have time to sort through and keep an events calender. But sometimes one just catches his eye and he has to pass it on.

On February 16th at the City Tavern Club (next to the Banana Republic on M St.) the 8th Annual Chance for Life poker tournament will be held. The event raises money to help fight pediatric spinal cord cancer.

Pediatric spinal cord cancer is a awfully clinical way of describing an awful thing: little kids with cancer attacking their spinal cords. The inspiration of this annual event is Kennedy Snyder, a brave 12 year old girl who has spent most of her life fighting this cancer. (In writing this, GM realized that she’s from his hometown, which makes it hit even a little harder for him). Continue reading

Come Out and Skate to Support Concerts in the Parks

One of the great community events in Georgetown is the summer Concerts in the Parks series. Each year the parties and the crowds get bigger and bigger. This summer should be the best yet.

But it takes money to throw such a great party. And what better way to raise money for a party than to throw another party?

This Sunday from 4:00 to 6:30 pm, the Concerts in the Parks committee will be hosting a skating party down at the wonderful new Washington Harbour ice rink. On top of the skating, there will be games for the kids inside Tony and Joe’s and food and drinks for all.

Holiday Concerts Coming Up

It seems like this time of year the only acceptably cool response to the omnipresence of Christmas music is to act like it’s the worst part of the season, like summer’s humidity or spring’s tourists. GM rejects that. From the moment the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers are first packed away till New Years, GM surrounds himself in a bubble of holiday tunes.

So if you too are looking for a few more holiday tunes to cram in, check out these concerts around Georgetown coming up:

The Barnes and Hampton Celtic Consort – Dumbarton Concerts

This Saturday at 4 pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 4 pm, the Dumbarton Ave. Methodist Church holds its annual candlelight Christmas concert. This year the Barns and Hampton Celtic Consort will perform.

Georgetown University Jazz Ensemble

Today at 1:15 at McNeir Hall on the GU campus, the Georgetown University Jazz Ensemble will present its annual Christmas concert. Admission is free!

Eric Felton Jazz Orchestra – Blues Alley

Next Tuesday, at 8 pm and 10 pm, the Eric Felton Jazz Orchestra will perform its Duke Ellington Nutcracker Suite at Blues Alley.

That should holdover even the most dedicated fan of holiday music. Now please excuse GM while he puts on some Christmas Cookin’.

BID Offers Free Pedicabs Through Holidays

From 2008 till 2010, the Georgetown BID put on a holiday street fair in December called Merriment in Georgetown. While the first year was cursed with wickedly cold weather, the subsequent years seemed like qualified successes to GM: not exactly Christkindl Market, but a good start for something that could eventually grow into a really special tradition.

Sadly the BID decided last year to no longer hold the street fair. It simply was not producing enough of a splash at the merchants’ cashiers to make it worth while. But the BID is carrying on with festive events nonetheless. One thing they are actually extending this year is the free pedicab rides they offered just one day last year. Each Saturday from Nov. 24th through December 15th, there will be free pedicab rides around the neighborhood. Continue reading
