The Georgetown Metropolitan

A great new map put out by the DC Historic Preservation Office can tell you exactly when your house was built (sort of).

Go to this site and use the map to find your house (or whatever house you’re interested in) and click it. A box will pop up telling you information about the property. Typically this includes the date the original building permit was issued and to whom. For some properties it has the original resident or its purpose.

This is fantastic information, especially because on most DC records, if a house was built before 1900, it simply lists 1900 as the year of construction. You see that a lot in real estate listings. This should improve upon that. Continue reading →

IMPORTANT MESSAGE STRAIGHT FROM SANTA:

Dear Children and Neighbors,

Please join me, Santa Claus, and the Friends of Volta Park as we gather in Georgetown to celebrate the Christmas season.   Children young and old are invited to take pictures with me and receive a toy from Santa’s workshop.  

 

Mrs. Claus will be serving complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, doughnuts and other baked goods.  There will be sports activities provided by my friend Coach John and our craft tables to keep you busier than my elves on Christmas Eve.

 

Arrive early to see Santa’s magical sleigh ride.  Please join me on Sunday December 4^th 10am-noon on the Volta Park playground.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

1500 block of 33rd St.

Tomorrow night, the Citizens Association of Georgetown will host a public meeting on the future of Hyde-Addison elementary school and the Duke Ellington School for the Arts. Mayor Bowser will be in attendance, and so with Councilmembers Jack Evans and David Grosso. The meeting will be at St. John’s (across from Hyde). The reception will start at 7:00, with the meeting beginning at 7:30.

It is difficult to overstate how important this meeting is for the near and long term future of Hyde-Addison. The mayor is apparently intent on the school using Meyer Elementary School as the swing space for the students for up to two years. DCPS’s own traffic studies showed that the trip from Hyde to Meyer could take up to 45 minutes, each way. Moreover, Hyde parents have toured Meyer and reported that it is in terrible shape and would require a full renovation itself before being an acceptable option. The message from the Duke Ellington kids who are currently using Meyer was that they couldn’t wait to get out of it. Continue reading →

Montrose Park
