Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • This is largely why GM doesn’t go down to the Washington Harbour that much anymore.
  • Something called Calypso St. Barth is opening in one of Eastbanc’s properties on the western end of M St. It will had women’s clothes, and home furnishings. What an odd mixture.

Old Georgetown in Color

Dahlgren Chapel

GM is going to keep doing more of these Old Georgetown in Color posts for a little while (where GM applies his Photoshop skills to colorize old black and white photos). Today, he brings color to a 1948 photo of Dahlgren Chapel on the grounds of Georgetown University.

As you can see by comparing it to a modern photo, it was a tad overgrown 65 years ago:

You can’t even see the stained glass window in the 1948 photo. Ivy growth like that (particularly if it’s English ivy) can do some serious damage to brick. It looks like either that damage was avoided or the brick was repaired.

Although the ivy is so damaging, it’s hard not to admit that an ivy covered chapel is awfully charming. Continue reading

Find Out of What Georgetown Tastes Like

Tomorrow is the annual Taste of Georgetown street festival. It will again take place on Wisconsin Ave. between K and the canal. And as always, the beneficiary of the event will be the valuable Georgetown Ministries, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The event will go from 11 AM to 4 pm. For $5, you get one ticket to sample some food. $20 buys you five tickets. There will be a beer garden again this year, offering craft beer and fine wines.

If you drop enough money (for a good cause!) you may walk away finally figuring out what Georgetown tastes like.

Or you can look at GM’s chart:

Taste

But you should do both.

ANC Preview: Boring Edition

Next Monday the ANC will meet for its June meeting. The agenda is a long one, possibly reflecting the rush to get projects approved before the summer hits. Here are some of the highlights:

To Bore or Not

Way back in 2009, CAG held a meeting on the topic of the water authority, WASA, and its big plans for the future. To address the fact that our sewers overflow after big rainstorms, WASA began formulating plans to increase the system’s capacity. The biggest tool to address this would be the digging of a massive tunnel along the Potomac that would serve as a giant underground reservoir to receive sewer overflows.

This would, needless to say, be really expensive. And disruptive. The city is exploring whether alternative measures couldn’t address the issue without taking such a dramatic step like massive tunneling.

The ANC is scheduled to hear a WASA rep come and discuss its sewage overflow remediation efforts. GM suspects the issues above will be discussed. Continue reading
