Is Georgetown Cupcake Really Worth This?

Georgetown Cupcakery's Line

Georgetown Cupcake turns a year old on St. Valentine’s Day, and there are still crazy long lines out the door to buy $3.00 cupcakes. Are they really that good that you’ll sit in line for a half an hour?

GM’s been by and it was damn good (it was the Chocolate Mint) but there wasn’t a line at the time. There’s no way GM would wait in a line for them (particularly when Baked and Wired makes equally, if not superior, cupcakes without the wait). How about you? Do other Georgetowners wait in line for them, or has it just become a tourist thing?

  1. The photo shows a much shorter line than usual. My 10 and 11 year old daughters save their allowance money to wait in line for those cupcakes, for themselves and sometimes for their teachers. The longer the line, the more they want them. Chocolate (3) and Red Velvet. The place seems to be enormously popular with female GT students.

Their cupcakes are very good (my favorite is chocolate (3)) but I won’t wait in that line…and I definitely agree that Baked & Wired is much better!

I agree with Kathy that the line above is one of the shorter ones. If I don’t make it within five minutes (literally) of them opening, I won’t go. Plus, I prefer Baked and Wired’s (esp. their Red Velvet); it’s just a bit further of a walk.

I once tried to go, but the line was much, much longer than this, so I didn’t bother.

Is it like this on weekdays, too? I meant to go on my last day off…

  5. It was really, really nice out–I bet people welcomed an excuse to be outside.

If I had realized this was a “short” line when I took the photo, maybe I would’ve gotten in it.

I’ve tried Baked & Wired to avoid the line at Geogetown Cupcake, but I just don’t think it its nearly as good. Gobs of ultra-sweet, sugary icing. I prefer the smooth vanilla cream cheese icing on the Vanilla on Vanilla cupcake at Georgetown Cupcake. Its still my favorite shop in the city, and I’ve tried them all. I’ll still go to Cakelove once in a while when I’m in the mood for butter cream icing though.
