Crime Ticked Up This Summer

Yesterday GM took a look at the summer real estate numbers and concluded that not much changed from the spring. Today he turns to the crime numbers, and unfortunately the news is not the same. The crime numbers are up overall, although not necessarily where you’d think.

This summer there were 262 crimes reported to MPD. In the spring that number was 230. That’s a 14% jump. Not good.

And where does most of that spike come from: thefts, burglaries, and assaults with a deadly weapon. Here are the numbers:

  • Theft:
    • Spring: 141
    • Summer: 175
  • Burglary
    • Spring: 12
    • Summer: 18
  • ADW
    • Spring: 4
    • Summer: 13(!)

GM was surprised to see one stat: robberies. Despite that attention that has been given to the recent spate of violent iPhone robberies, the overall robbery numbers are actually down from the spring. Theft from autos, a common summer crime, was also actually down last quarter. Here are the rest of those numbers:

  • Robbery
    • Spring: 15
    • Summer: 13
  • Theft from auto
    • Spring: 40
    • Summer: 28
  • Stolen Auto:
    • Spring: 17
    • Summer: 14

So there you have it. The most alarming stat in all of this is the more than tripling of the ADW number. GM will try to dig into that number a little bit more soon to figure out what the story is there.

I wonder, though, if crime doesn’t always tick up in the summer with longer days and warmer nights. Is it possible that the more apt comparison would be to summer of ’09, rather than spring 2010?

Good question KPE. I don’t think crime actually goes up noticeably for Georgetown most summers, but it’s something I’ll verify when I get a chance this week.
