ANC Preview: Judge For Yourself Edition

After GM had his say yesterday on the ANC, you can come next ANC meeting next Monday and see the ANC in action for yourself.

So what’s on tap? Unfortunately, not much. Five of the eight Old Georgetown Board items are residential, which can lead to heated discussions, but are rarely newsworthy. A good way to think of them is to view them as learning experiences as either how to or, more often, how not to go about doing home renovations.

As for the commercial matters, one thing jumps out to GM: Billy Reid, a high end clothing store, is moving into the space recently vacated by Riccardi at 3213 M St.

Another item GM noticed is that the new Thunder Grill, which installed a huge and ugly awning without any approvals, is getting reviewed by the Old Georgetown Board, but the ANC put it on the no-review calendar (they do that when they trust the OGB to make the aesthetic call).

There are a few ABC renewals, with Chadwicks, Modern, Rhino Bar, and Garrett’s all coming up, but GM doesn’t foresee any issue. Plus the interestingly named International House of Pong will make its first appearance.

Oh, and speaking of Garrett’s GM heard an interesting rumor the other day that it’s closing soon once its lease runs out.

Here’s the agenda:

  1. I read your ANC endorsements and non-endorsement with interest. I think you don’t quite understand that although the commissioners spend a good part of the ANC public meetings dealing with OGB design, the time spent in the community between meetings is enormous. Traffic, safety, zoning and Georgetown University are some of the issues that affect all the communities, Burleith, Hillendale, etc. The ANC commissioners are concerned individuals who look out for all Georgetowner’s interests. I have had issues over the years with some ANC commissioners going back to the very first commission…..but I always respected all of them for stepping up and getting involved. I thought your comments about one certain commissioner were out of line. That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking with it.

    P.S. Of all the commissioners over the years, the very best one was William Cochran. He is missed.

  2. Ken Archer

    @Dave Roffman,

    GM expressed the same respect for the investment of time and energy by the commissioners to step up and get involved that you express, and he specifically expressed that with regard to the commissioners he chose not to endorse.

    Was GM incorrect in anything he said? I’m pretty sure he’s not. If not, why is he out-of-line?
