ANC Preview: Ellington Edition

Next week the ANC meets for its March session. Unlike the snooze-fest of last month’s meeting, this meeting has the potential to be quite interesting.

And the most interesting item up for discussion is the proposal to renovate the Duke Ellington School. This is the rare ANC matter that actually doesn’t involve Georgetown since the school is technically in Burleith. (The boundary between Georgetown and Burleith travels down the center of 35th St. in front of the school.)

Normally projects in Burleith are not subject to review of the Old Georgetown Board. And this project is no different. But since the school is a landmarked building, the changes must be approved by the OGB’s superiors at the Commission of Fine Arts.

The tensions around the future of the school are quite fascinating. An influential governing board has raised a bundle of cash to pay for the ambitious renovations. But the neighbors worry about the impact the newly configured school could have on the surrounding residents. Primarily the concern is over the potential noise from the expansive planned roof deck. Adding another layer to this is the fact that Ward 2 councilmember and mayoral candidate Jack Evans has long made it known that he wants to convert the school back to its original role as a neighborhood high school.

If by some chance Evans pulls out a surprising victory for the Democratic primary, it will be interesting to see if he tries to slow down the approval process and start searching for a new location for the magnet school (although angering the Ellington backers would probably not make for a good first act as a general election campaign).

And hey, speaking of Jack, he’ll be at the ANC meeting, so perhaps we can ask him about Ellington then!

Here’s the agenda:
