GM has learned that the vacant space on Wisconsin south of M-which once housed Houston’s, and more recently Rugby-has been claimed by “quirky” furniture store Nadeau.
The store most recently appeared in Georgetown during the Cady’s Alley holiday bazaar. Or perhaps you’re familiar with the Alexandria location (or the other dozen or so spots across the country).
GM would be remiss in not noting that this appears consistent with the steady drumbeat of historic restaurant spaces being converted to retail. Just last week we found out that the former Nathan’s space will become an Under Armour store. (Although it should be noted that before Houston’s 18 years at the location, it was a clothing store. And, of course, Rugby was primarily a clothing store, with just half the space dedicated to the pub.)
The one thing going for Nadeau is that at least it’s not another clothing store. GM’s gone on about this: but retail diversity is critical for Georgetown’s long-term survival as a vibrant commercial district. It can’t live and die by one segment alone.
