Today in Old Georgetown in Color, GM brings some color to an off-color scene: the sight of a bunch of GU students sunning themselves on the roof of Copley Hall in 1937, with one of the students flipping the bird to the camera. The photo is curtesy of GU Library and came to GM’s attention via Ghosts of DC.
According to Ghosts of DC, among those pictured include John F. Detmer (C’1938); Henry M. Leslie (C’1938); Daniel J. ‘Bud’ O’Donovan (C’1938); and Edward P. Sweeney, (C’1938). Chances are some, if not all, of these men were in uniform a few years later.
GM doubts GU kids come anywhere near the roof like this these days. Of course, unlike today, maybe back then students couldn’t just lay around half naked like this and that explains why they needed to hide out up here in the first place rather than just stretching out on the quad.
