Yesterday Hyde-Addison principal, Dana Nerenberg, announced that she will be stepping down as principal after the end of this school year. She is moving to Portland to join her fiancee. Here’s the announcement:
Dear Hyde-Addison Families and Community:
Hyde-Addison is a special school that I have had the privilege of leading for the past eight years. During this time I have had the opportunity to form relationships with your children and families, work with amazing teachers and staff, and lead the development of a learning community for children and adults. It is with a wide range of mixed emotions that I write today to share that this year will be my last as the principal of Hyde-Addison as this summer I will be relocating to Portland, Oregon to join my fiancee.
Leaving a community and school that is so dear to me is not an easy decision, but I am confident Hyde-Addison is in a terrific place for the next leader to take the helm. We have a truly exceptional staff; a living and rigorous curriculum; a clear vision, mission, and charge; and plenty of work to do in service of our amazing students! I am working closely with our staff to ensure our last seven weeks of school are marvelous learning experiences for all of our students while preparing for the 2014-2015 school year with long range planning and recruitment and selection of new staff. We are also eagerly planning for the Phase 1 Modernization of the Hyde Building which will begin on Saturday, June 21.
DCPS facilitates the placement of principals with great care and community input. To that end, Instructional Superintendent, Jacqueline Gartrell, and Mark Donnelly, the DCPS Director of Principal Recruitment and Selection will meet with our faculty and staff next Tuesday, May 13 at 8:00 am and parents and community members at 9:00 am in the Commons. Together they will explain the process for forming a panel representative of our parents, faculty, staff, and community to engage in the process of interviewing principal candidates. Please know I am committed to working closely with my successor throughout the transition period and I will be back to visit!
In the spirit of partnership between family and school, I ask that you share this news with your children. Each of them are very dear to me and I am happy to discuss my news with them, but I would appreciate them hearing it from you first.
As always my door is always open and should you have any questions, concerns, worries, or wonders (or friends in Portland), please do not hesitate to call me at 202.724.9055 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dana has done a fantastic job at Hyde, and GM is sad the she’s leaving before his own daughter can enroll there. But the ship is in good shape, and the next captain’s job will be all the easier due to Dana’s work over the years.
Thank you and best of luck in Portland Dana!
