Park(ing) Day returns to Georgetown tomorrow. Parking spaces in front of three stores in Georgetown will be converted to mini-public parks.
Last year was a particularly successful Park(ing) Day in Georgetown. The Baked and Wired park seen above was a wonderful use of space that typically goes to a handful of people who drive to Georgetown. Malmaison also had tables out on Water St.
Baked and Wired will return tomorrow. It will be joined by FLOR (on Cady’s Alley) and Luke’s Lobsters. Here’s what they have planned:
Popular local bakery and coffeehouse Baked & Wiredplans an interactive pop-up parklet that will include reclaimed railroad tracks as well as fresh plants and grass; buckets filled with chalk encourage visitors to draw or write messages in the “park.” Designed to encourage community gathering and conversation, the parklet will also feature live music throughout the day.
Innovative carpet design company FLOR will create an outdoor “green carpet” made from its signature modular tiles. A “putting green” at the center of the parklet encourages play, while a selection of outdoor furniture from nearby design shop Design Within Reach (3307 Cady’s Alley, NW) invites lingering and conversation. In keeping with the golf theme, FLOR will serve complimentary “Arnold Palmer” refreshments throughout the day.
The parklet at Maine lobster roll company Luke’s Lobster will include outdoor seating and buoys in keeping with the company’s nautical theme. At parking Day, Luke’s will debut its beer ($6), wine ($9), and cocktails ($10) offering, which will feature Four Maine microbrews: Allagash White, Peak Organic IPA, Shipyard Export, as well as a brew from Rhode Island, Narragansett. Cocktails will include a Dark n’ Stormy and a Salty Dog. For PARKing Day and beyond, Luke’s will offer a combo deal—with the purchase of a roll, beer is $3; wine and cocktails are $5.
