Sisyphus Leans His Shoulder to the Boulder Once More

The mighty King Sisyphus was cursed by the gods for his trickery by being forced for eternity to slowly push a boulder up a steep hill, only to have the boulder roll back down before it reached the top, over and over again.

It’s not clear what act the National Parks Service has done to suffer the wrath of the gods, but it sure seems like its goal of building more boathouses along the Potomac is a boulder that repeatedly rolls back down the hill. As far back as 1987, the National Park Service charted out plans to build multiple new boathouses around Key Bridge.

Georgetown University and George Washington University would both be candidates for the new buildings. And both have spent piles of money and time in the decades since trying to see that plan come to fruition. Multiple studies have been commenced and expired over the years with no genuine progress to show for it.

So with that cheerful prelude, GM would like to report that NPS is trying once more to get the process going to build more boathouses. Next Wednesday, NPS will hold a meeting at the Palisades Library from 6 to 8 to conduct a “public scoping”. The brochure for the meeting indicates that we’re merely at step one of a five step process (the fifth step is just the decision. There would obviously be many more steps before a building is actually built.)

So next week, Sisyphus leans once more into that mighty boulder. Will this be the time that he finally gets it to the top of the hill?
