GM passed this bike yesterday. It’s a nifty bike. If it were GM’s, he sure wouldn’t want it to be stolen. But nonetheless, he wouldn’t do what this bike owner did: lock it to a tree.
It might not seem like such a big deal to have a lock wrapped around a tree trunk. But it doesn’t take much to rub away the bark and give an opening to infection. It can significantly shorten the life of a tree.
And what’s worse, there was a street sign just down the block completely open. (Although, in fairness it could have been occupied when this bike owner arrived). The best part of a bike is not having to deal with the parking issues you have with a car. But you still have to park responsibly. And locking to a tree is not responsible. Walk a little bit further and find an open street sign.
Of course, this also is a testament to lack of good bike parking in Georgetown, which is a real problem. And if a lack of bike parking leads people to lock to trees, then it becomes a problem for all of us, cyclist or not. So keep this is mind when you see the city or the BID propose more bike racks.
