Grosso Restores Hyde Renovation Schedule

ANC Preview: Hyde Gym Edition

The Washington Post reported over the weekend that Councilmember David Grosso, the chair of the Education Committee, has modified the mayor’s proposed school construction timeline and Hyde-Addison looks to benefit from it.

The city has been planning an addition to Hyde for over five years. Once built, it will finally provide the school with a gym and a appropriately sized cafeteria and library. It will also provide needed additional classroom space.

The proposal finally received design approvals this spring, but time ran out to begin construction this June (construction needs to start when school is out). So the community was expecting a June 2016 start, with construction finishing by fall 2017.

Unfortunately, Mayor Bowser cut money from the school construction project and delayed the construction of multiple projects, including Hyde. Now construction would not start until June 2017.

The school and neighborhood community rallied behind the school and made the case to restore the 2016 start. Jack Evans stood up at the last ANC meeting and swore his support for the effort. And CM Grosso listened.

It’s not final until the budget is final. So please consider reaching out to other members of the Council and letting them know how important this project is and why it needs to keep moving forward.
