The eastside of the 1200 block of Wisconsin Ave. is soon going to be converted to a 24 hour pick-up/drop-off zone. What that means is that the right most lane of this block will be used only for loading or unloading or either passengers or goods. The parking will be eliminated.
The goal of this is to move Ubers, Lyfts, and other taxis out of the moving lanes when they’re dropping off passengers or picking them up. It is also hoped that this will reduce double parking by delivery trucks.
If you stand in front of the Apple store (which is the block where this change will occur) for about five minutes, you’ll see how this will help. It is a steady stream of people getting into or out of various ride share vehicles. And if you sat there all day, you’d surely count way more people coming and going by that route than the number of people using the lane for parking.
This change is part of a citywide pilot. The city will evaluate the performance of the zones before making any of them permanent.
