About eight years ago, GM asked “What Would be Your Heartbreaker?” The idea was, what store closing would break your heart? GM wrote it in the wake of several beloved stores and restaurants closing, including the news that Furin’s was also on the way out.
Here are some of the answers people came up with, and whether they’ve since closed:
- Martin’s
- Clyde’s
- Peacock Cafe
- Booeymonger
- Bistro Francais (closed)
- The Tombs
- Thomas Sweet
- Barnes and Noble (closed)
- Georgetown Tobacco
- La Chaumiere
- Cafe La Ruche (closed)
- Baked and Wired
- 1789
- Cafe Milano
- The Old Print Gallery (closed)
- Georgetown Antiques (closed)
- J. Paul’s (closed)
- Chadwick’s (sort of closed after Mr. Smith’s took over the space, but it’s still pretty much the same)
- Appalachian Spring (closed)
- Morgan’s
- Parrish Gallery (closed)
- Georgetown Inn
- Scheele’s
- The Dog Shop (closed)
- The Phoenix
That was quite a list. And eight of the twenty-six have closed since then. But it’s still a pretty good list of places that would be awfully missed if they closed.
Are there any newer stores you’d add? Via Umbria has become a favorite fairly quickly. The Sovereign and Chez Billy Sud are also two quality additions of recent years. What do you think?

Bodega and Fiola Mare… maybe the Alex
Stachowski’s.
