The Georgetown Metropolitan

This week on Georgetown Time Machine, GM returns to DDOT’s fantastic archive for another aerial shot. This one, taken sometime between 1963 and 1965, shows a fairly clear shot of the entire neighborhood. It enables us to zoom in on some interesting details.

For instance, you can see the large plot of empty land that Georgetown Visitation would eventually sell to become the Cloisters:

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

• Georgetown Main Street program starting to roll out the events to boost business along upper Wisconsin.
• Update: Yeah, the waterfront is going to flood a lot over the next week.

1300 block of 29th St.

Even before the hurricane hits, the Potomac at Georgetown could see some moderate flooding. NOAA predicts that at the Georgetown waterfront, the water level will peak during tomorrow night’s high tide (a little after 8:00 pm). The expected level is just over 9 feet.

That’s below the levels the river hit back in May. So don’t expect any dramatic flooding. But with a potentially historic hurricane following right after this swell recedes, there is potential for some far more serious flooding by this weekend. Continue reading →

• People like the new Guapo’s on the waterfront.
• Some guy ran the entire C & O Canal (184 miles), from Georgetown to Cumberland, in 36 hours.

1300 block of 35th St.

A Mexican restaurant named Pica Taco is coming to 3206 O St. This space previously hosted Gtown Bites, which itself took over for the longer lasting Georgetown Dinette.

Pica Taco has one other location over on Florida Ave. near 14th St. It sells mostly take out food, which appears to be standard Mexican-American fare. It has mixed reviews on Yelp, for what it’s worth. Continue reading →
