Now and a Long Time Ago: Western High School

western-high-school

This week for Now and a Long Time Ago, GM is stopping by the old Western High School, which is now the Duke Ellington School for the Arts.

There’s not a ton different on the 35th St. facade from how it was when this postcard was made (probably in the early 20th century). GM just thought you’d like to be reminded of what it looked like to have an open and functional school at that location, as opposed to the gigantic money pit that currently occupies the space. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GM doesn’t see any announcements from DDOT, but you should probably assume road closures throughout Georgetown should be in effect tonight.
  • Some Halloween events.

(But frankly it’s not entirely clear). Continue reading

Now and a Long Time Ago: O St.

o-st

This week for Now and a Long Time Ago, GM is visiting O St. and an idyllic postcard that the Ebay listing for it says is from the 50’s or 60’s.

The specific block is O St. just west of Wisconsin Ave. Nowadays it is a mix of antiques shops, a gym, and some restaurants. The watercolor depiction of the street doesn’t make it clear what type of shops all the shops were. But the shop of the far left appears to be called “Georgetown Temptations”. Post archives indicate that Martha Wrenn Bobbitt McTigue operated a shop in Georgetown with that name from 1965 till 1975. It was described as a gift shop. Continue reading
