The Georgetown Metropolitan Turns 15

Bust out the quinceanera dress, the Georgetown Metropolitan turns 15 years old today! I started up this website on December 13, 2008 and never thought it remotely possible that it would be still going this long. In fact, I’m just a couple years from surpassing the original run of the Metropolitan, which lasted from 1820 to 1837.

People often ask me how I keep it up, but really it’s no different from any hobby. Whether you collect baseball cars, or knit, play pickleball, whatever, it takes time, but it’s time you mostly enjoy spending. I still enjoy (mostly) spending the time to keep this up. (And really, it’s not that much time. I got it down to a science a long time ago). So I hope you all enjoy it too! Here’s to another 15!

Hyde-Addison 2024-25 Enrollment Open Now

Time for another monthly update from Hyde-Addison from Hyde-parent Phil Mone, including information on re-enrollment:

The lottery for a spot in PK3 and PK4 at Hyde Addison Elementary School for the 2024/2025 school year has now opened. I just submitted an application for our 2yr old for PK3 at Hyde next year (to join her older siblings who will be in K and 2nd).

You can submit your child’s application at https://apply.myschooldc.dc.gov/

You must submit your application by March 1, 2024 at the latest! The results will be posted on March 29, 2024.

Hyde has one PK3 class (16 students) and two PK4 classes (19 students in each class).  Hyde Addison has already hosted two Prospective Family Open Houses and there are three more scheduled, with the next one being held in person at the school on January 26 at 2pm. More details here: https://hydeaddisondc.org/open-houses

Also—big news: annually, DC releases a “report card” ranking all of its schools.  This report card was just released and Hyde was ranked as the #2 school for ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, district wide.  The parents and students of Hyde are not surprised (based on their experiences at the school), but were very proud when we heard the news this past Friday morning at the weekly school-wide meeting (which parents are invited to each week)

Leaf Collection Beginning in West Georgetown

Just a reminder that leaf collection is set to begin today in west Georgetown. Please try to collect any loose leaves on your sidewalk into a pile in the tree boxes. If possible, try to rake up leaves in the gutter, as those are often hard for the crews to reach. When those crews will actually hit your block is unclear. It seems to take the city several weeks for each section so far, so they may still not be through until mid-month. That said, they could be through at any time starting today, so try to give them a hand if you can!

ANC Round Up

Monday night, the ANC met for our last public meeting in 2023. While it (thankfully) lacked some of the discord of some of our recent meetings, it nonetheless covered a lot of ground. Here are the top take aways:

Update from the US Attorneys Office

Perhaps the most substantive item on the agenda for the night was a visit from Wendy Polhaus of the US Attorney’s Office for DC. For those not familiar with our unique structure, in DC we do not have a District Attorney to prosecute criminal actions. All cases (against adults) are brought by the federal US Attorney’s Office for DC, no matter whether the actions are brought in local DC Superior Court or federal District Court. Thus unlike any other city in the country, DC is dependent upon a arm of the Justice Department to enforce most serious laws. (The DC Attorney General’s office handles juvenile cases and certain lower level misdemeanors.)

So in effect, our “district attorney” is an unelected official chosen by the President and approved by a Senate in which we have no vote.
