Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Georgetown bars are not, um, terribly well respected, let’s just say.

Back in March, GM noted that the new Car2Go car-sharing service had the potential to be a great option for Georgetowners. Now it’s getting even better.
For those new to the system, it works this way: There are (now) 200 blue-and-white Smart Cars scattered around DC. With a membership you can hop in one and drive it to where you’re going. Once you get to your destination, don’t worry about returning the car to where you picked it up; it’s a one-way rental. Plus, you don’t have to worry about parking tickets; the company has taken care of that.
But even though you don’t have to feed a meter or worry about moving the car after two hours, you still need to find a legal space. This can sometimes be a problem when you’re driving to a nightlife hotspot. Car2Go is now going to make that a little easier. Continue reading

Tim Carman reported in the Post yesterday that the longtime standby, the Guards, was closing temporarily, with the chance it might close for good. Carman wrote:
Owner Hossein Shirvani is apparently locked in lease negotiations with the landlord. The issue is supposed to be resolved soon. If The Guards wins the battle of wills with the landlord, it will likely close for renovations before reopening, Salcedo says.
GM hopes that this squabble will pass without taking down a landmark. He has fond memories of the place, and he’s surely not alone. Continue reading

ANC candidates have until August 8th to turn in petitions to appear on the ballot this November. While that’s still a week away, the likely candidates for Georgetown’s ANC are already clear, and they should be pretty familiar. Every non-student commissioner is running again unopposed. And the two new student commissioners are also set to run unopposed.
So for the record: Ed Solomon, Ron Lewis, Jeff Jones, Bill Starrells, Charlie Eason, and Tom Birch are all running again. Barring some late entrant, the two new student commissioners will be Craig Cassey Jr. and Peter Prindiville.
While GM doesn’t agree with every stance each existing commissioner takes (some even less than others), they’re a generally good group. That said, for the sake of democracy, it would probably be a good thing if we actually had a contested election every once in a while.
Oh, and this will be the third straight term where all the commissioners are white men.
