Another Metro Line Through Georgetown Considered

Back in January, GM discussed the long range plans that a WMATA group was considering that would, among other things, bring a metro stop to Georgetown (actually, two metro stops). The new stations would be part of a plan to create a new cross-town Metro tunnel underneath M St. to accommodate the added traffic on the Silver Line.

Recently this same group considered another radical plan that would also bring a Metro stop to Georgetown. It would be called the Brown line and it would travel roughly parallel with the Red line from Friendship Heights down to Georgetown. From there it would travel across town south of the Blue/Orange lines before turning back north to head up through Petworth and on to 16th St. Heights.

This line is actually quite like another Brown line that was suggested by David Alpert three years ago (although even he hasn’t included it in fantasy maps he’s done since then). The WMATA group considered the impact that such a line would have on the overcrowding of the other lines. Among other impacts, the group estimated that the new Brown line would add approximately 20,000 more daily trips and increase the percentage of DC and Arlington residents using transit from 70% to 74%.

Of the various proposed new subway lines, GM thinks this one has the least utility. There isn’t much density around Ward Circle, nor is there much hope of adding much. Wisconsin and Mass is an even more screwy location for a Metro stop. Sure, people would use it to get to National Cathedral, but there just aren’t enough residents in the immediate vicinity to justify that. A Metro stop in Glover Park, on the other hand, would make a lot more sense, but this map doesn’t include one.

The idea of sending a Metro across town under Constitution Ave. was considered as an alternative route for the split Blue line. And the study group found that it would result in less ridership than a route under M St. GM thinks the same considerations would apply to the Brown line too. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Students uncover emails showing a lot of discussions between the ANC and the Office of Planning before OP’s report was published on the campus plan. Of course, anyone that was familiar with the ANC’s own conclusions should have recognized how similar OP’s report was to them. Whether you view this a nefarious or simple lobbying probably correlates to whether you’re for the campus plan or not. (And huzzah to the students for getting the emails, that was a sharp move.)
  • Want your mascara to last six weeks? There’s apparently a place in Georgetown for that now.

Not So Long Ago: M and TJ

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week on Not So Long Ago, GM stops by M and Thomas Jefferson Streets. Today on the north side of the street there is Sephora, a cosmetics store, Kate Spade, a handbag and apparel store, and Blue Mercury, another cosmetics store. These are square in the middle of the young-women-shopping market that has steadily grown in Georgetown over the years.

But 18 years ago the scene was different. Where Sephora now stands once stood Georgetown Seafood Grill. It was a laid back seafood restaurant owned by Capital Restaurant Concepts, the name behind other similarly laid back restaurants J.Pauls and Old Glory, among others. In 1997, four years after this photo was taken, Anthony Lanier and EastBanc bought out the building. After renovations, Sephora moved in.

There was another restaurant down on 19th and M called Georgetown Seafood and Grill, which renamed itself “Fin”. GM doesn’t know if there was a connection, but either way, it’s closed.

Next to Georgetown Seafood Grill was Rosey Cross. From what GM can determine, it was a new age type store. From one account, it was originally called “Crystals”. GM tried to research more into the store, but when you Google “Rosey Cross” and “Georgetown”, you get tons of conspiracy websites trying to try Rosicrucianism  with the Jesuits, and the Illuminati, or something. But GM has said to much already…

It looks like Rosey Cross didn’t last too much longer after this photo was taken. By 2004, at the latest, Kate Spade was in this spot.

Next over was Eyetech, an eyeglass store. GM couldn’t find anything particularly interesting about this store. By 2004, Blue Mercury was already there.

There is also a slight part of the building that is currently housing Miss Saigon. GM can’t make out what the awning says, but it clearly wasn’t Miss Saigon. Anyone remember?

Here are the static shots: Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Serendipity 3 already lost its Executive Chef. Could signal trouble, but then again, Hook lost Barton Seaver pretty soon after it opened (although not nearly this soon) and it turned out alright. Plus, Serendipity already has lines out the door, so that weighs in its favor.
  • Not too much else going on, but don’t forget the Rose Park Farmers Market tonight.

Georgetown on a Saturday

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Last week, GM bought a new camera. This one’s got video capabilities, so he took it out for a spin last weekend. One of the features is the gimmicky faux-tilt shift effects, which makes the image look like a miniature, and speeds it up to enhance the ant-like effect. Like HDR, it’s very easy to overuse. But it’s fun for a little bit.

Anyway, enjoy scenes of a Georgetown Saturday afternoon set to the sweet sounds of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Rickie Fowler Sinks Hole in One at the Waterfront

Vodpod videos no longer available.

GM didn’t realize this until it was over, but apparently Red Bull set up a golf-themed promotion at the Washington Harbour last weekend. They invited 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler, to take a shot on the makeshift golf course. Well, it only took one shot, as you can see from the video.

This looks like a great use of the building’s space. It reminds GM that some Georgetowners are trying to organize to bring an ice rink to the same spot. It’s too bad the actual waterfront park can’t have more activities like this. There was an ice rink in the park in the late 90s, when the city leased part of the park. When NPS took the park back over, the ice rink was booted. NPS insists on the waterfront park being a “passive park”. Maybe showy events like a Red Bull-sponsored pitch-and-putt (or, in this case, just “pitch”) would be too much for the park, but bringing back the ice rink in the dead of winter would not threaten the peacefulness of the park.

Speaking of the waterfront park, GM learned last week that the BID is hoping to bring wireless Internet to the park. Neat.
