ANC Round Up: Jack Evans Edition

Last night ANC2E met for its March session. While GM wasn’t too hopeful for an interesting meeting, he really ought to know by now that it doesn’t take an exciting agenda to have a noteworthy meeting. On top of the list of items worth noting was an extended riff by Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans.

Jack Speaks

Councilmember Jack Evans made his semi-annual trip to ANC2E. He started out giving a stump speech on the state of the District’s finances. But from there he really just went off in a bunch of directions. For the sake of brevity, GM is just going to list the real choice quotations:

  • “The District of Columbia remains one of the strongest financial entities in America, state, county, or city. Our management of our finances since the Control Board Era, 1995 and 1996 to the present, has really been astute.” (Keep in mind that Evans has been the Chair of the Finance Committee for much of that time.)
  • “My goal as a resident of Georgetown has always been to improve the infrastructure of Georgetown. When I first moved here back in 1994, Georgetown was a wreck.”
  • “I always think it’s a bad decision when you are starting to run deficits in your government to raise taxes to cover them because it is a short term fix for a long term problem…The only way to deal with it is to get to the structure problem, you’re spending too much money…You can never raise taxes in a recessionary environment.” (Proving once again that this isn’t really a one party town; We’ve got Republicans in office, they just call themselves Democrats). Georgetown Crime in 2009

With the end of 2009, GM can now look back and take a look at the complete year crime statistics. While we did not experience quite the overall crime drop that the rest of the city experienced, we nonetheless shaved stats off of just about every category.

Here is how 2009 stacked up against 2008:

Overall, crime stayed about level from 2008 to 2009. It ticked down a mere 3.68%. If you were to disregard the thefts (most of which are shop-lifting and thus do not directly affect residents) the numbers are even more level, with a slight 1.62% increase from 2008 to 2009. Continue reading

ANC Round Up: Small Country, Short Meeting

Liechtenstein: Actual Size

Last night the ANC made good on GM’s prediction and held what is likely to be its shortest meeting of the year. This was mostly as a result of the fact that the Old Georgetown Board took a powder for January, and that cuts out about half the items from the agenda. Or as Commissioner Birch said “we learned tonight what it’s like to be a commissioner on an ANC that doesn’t have to send 15 projects to the Old Georgetown Board every month.” Although according to what GM’s heard about other ANC’s, like the notorious Foggy Bottom ANC, lacking Old Georgetown Board items is no impediment to interminable meetings.

While the meeting was short on OGB applications, it was still long on interesting items.

Crime Report

Lieutenant Hedgecock gave a presentation on crime and MPD’s efforts in Georgetown. One item at the top of the list was the probable resurfacing of the Georgetown Sexual Assaulter. On early Sunday morning a woman on Calvert St. in Glover Park was awoken with a man hugging her. After he started to make thrusting moves against her she screamed and he ran. As with all the other similar occurences she was unable to give a description of the offender.

Lieutenant Hedgecock gave a little more information on the series of attacks. He stated that years ago a man was arrested for similar offenses. He stated, however, that they do not believe the crimes are connected. He did add, though, that they believe these assaults are being perpetrated by multiple assailants.

One more sad bit: the individual who was found dead underneath the M St. bridge on Thursday was not simply a victim of the cold, as many suspected. He appears to have jumped or fallen off the bridge. Hedgecock could provide no more information on the case. Continue reading

Support CAG’s Public Safety Program

For several years, the Citizens Association of Georgetown has run a public safety program that supplements MPD’s normal coverage. It does this by hiring Securitas to patrol the neighborhood and by paying for a reimbursable detail from MPD (where normal MPD officers are paid overtime to work extra hours).

This doesn’t come cheap though. To maintain this program, CAG needs to solicit donations every year. Right now they’re in the middle of one of their fundraisers. So give what you can to support this worthwhile program.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Last Saturday, a mugger held up a pedestrian on the 3200 block of Reservoir. When he walked away with the victim’s wallet, the victim started to call the cops. The mugger saw this and ran back and stole the phone too and got away. Cheers to the victim for making an effort to call the cops as soon as possible. While it didn’t turn out as planned, GM thinks you’re awfully courageous.
  • DCist stops by for some hearty snacks at the Tombs.
  • Georgetown Voice digs into the Party Patrol.

Fox’s Will Thomas Mugged, Despite Overall Downward Trend

Wednesday night local Fox news anchor Will Thomas was mugged at gunpoint at Wisconsin and N. Thomas gave up his wallet and was physically unharmed by the assailant.

Within a day of this unfortunate event, GM penned a rebuttal to Harry Jaffe’s missive on the supposed increase in assaults with a deadly weapon across the Second Police District. But what about muggings? Is Thomas’ mugging part of a spike?

No.

As of this time last year Georgetown had experienced 39 robberies. This year that number is 37. In fact, if we keep at this pace, Georgetown will experience the fewest muggings in over four years:
