Dolcezza Georgetown Location to Close?

Dolcezza, long ranked among the best gelato shop in DC, was founded in Georgetown in 2003. But it may soon be leaving the neighborhood.

The uncertainty is from what it otherwise great news: Dolcezza is moving its production facilities from the basement of its Georgetown store to Union Market, the trendy new market in Ward 5. According to Eater DC:

A gelato tasting room, a coffee lab and a bar will all be a part of the gelato factory that Dolcezza is building near Union Market at 550 Penn St. NE….The 4,000 square foot warehouse (it used to be a wholesale flower market) will be the new home base for the D.C. company, which has been expanding throughout the area. The tasting room’s bar will seat 20 people, and tastings will be available between noon and 7 p.m. each day — customers will get the chance to sample gelato flavors as Dolcezza is trying them out.

Not So Long Ago: Wisconsin and Q

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week at Not So Long Ago, GM moves up a block from last week at stops by the excellent Dolcezza.

Dolcezza is an absolute gem of Georgetown. It has been selling its excellent Argentinian gelato since 2003. They have since opened two more locations in Bethesda and Dupont. But they still make their gelato in the basement of their Georgetown store.

In 1993, this space was apparently home to a fortune teller named Mrs. Dean. Fortune tellers still dot the Georgetown streetscape, but it seems the days of fortune tellers taking up an entire building are gone.

GM couldn’t find any information on Mrs. Dean. Nor can he remember what was in that space before Dolcezza. Anyone remember?

Here are the photos if you can’t get Flash to work above: Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Metrocurean rates Dolcezza as a top Hot Chocolate purveyor. GM concurs; their hot chocolate is like a melted chocolate bar; it’s that thick.
  • Where the bus route names, including the G2, came from.
  • In researching for an article that will appear later today, GM came across this cool website that compiles information from pay garages. It’s not real time information, but it gives you daily and monthly rates, which is pretty helpful.
