Georgetown Merriment Changes Tactics

On the first weekend in December for the last two years, the Georgetown BID has closed off a portion of Wisconsin Ave. above M St. and hosted a holiday street fair. While the first year suffered from incredibly cold and windy conditions, last year the weather was more favorable and the event appeared to be establishing itself as a fixture in the calendar.

Sadly, the tradition was short lived. The businesses decided that the event did not have enough of a pay-off at the cash registers to justify the cost of such a large event.

But they’re not giving up on the Merriment idea. Rather than focus on a single large event, the BID has stretched the fun out twelve days, starting this weekend.

Here’s the lineup of events:

Merriment in Georgetown Kick-Off Party
Saturday, December 10th, 1 – 4pm
PNC Bank Lot at Wisconsin & M Street

12 – 4pm

Complimentary pedicab rides from Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom metro stations to Georgetown

1pm & 1:50pm

Georgetown University’s a cappella group — The Georgetown Phantoms Continue reading

Merriment in Georgetown this Sunday

If the opening of the National Pinball Museum this Saturday wasn’t enough to get you excited, don’t forget that the annual Merriment in Georgetown is this Sunday (brain storm: while it’s probably too late now, the National Pinball Museum ought to get a booth next year.)

This is the third year of this great street festival. Last year’s success was particularly heartening since the first year’s festival suffered greatly due to extremely cold weather. With the warmer weather last year, crowds came out in force.

The Morning Metropolitan

Merriment Clown by M.V. Jantzen.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • In case you missed it, Pope is out at Hardy, Nerenberg will take over both Hyde-Addison and Hardy next year. More on this later.
  • Merriment in Georgetown was a huge success. It was cold but not frigid and the crowds were much bigger this year. While there are still a few kinks, it appears that this tradition will take hold.
  • Georgetown’s getting a Target! Kinda.

Merriment in Georgetown This Sunday

Come out this Sunday for the second annual Merriment in Georgetown festival. The festivities kick off at 3:00 and the current forecast is a high of 46 (so hopefully we’ll avoid last year’s bone-chilling colds).

There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, entertainment, food, Santa Claus and much, much more. This festival is a great addition to the Georgetown calender and GM hopes to see you all out there!

On another note: GM would like to compliment the BID on its great marketing of this event. The posters and website are wonderfully graphic and nostalgic. If only the BID could take the $30,000 it spends on its own website and make it look as good as the Merriment in Georgetown website. That would truly be money well spent.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Next Q & A Cafe on December 9 will have the two owners of Georgetown Cupcake.
  • More on the hubbub over Hardy: the Post reports, reader/parent responds.
  • Merriment in Georgetown coming back! Let’s hope it’s not the absolute coldest day of the year like it was last year.
