ANC Preview: Dean and Deluca Edition

The ANC will meet for its October session next Wednesday at 6:30 pm at its normal location, Georgetown Visitation. (Please note the odd day of week; the Commission would usually meet on Mondays, but due to Rosh Hashanah the meeting is being shifted to Wednesday).

The agenda has a couple of interesting items for foodies:

The first is a presentation by the District Department of General Services regarding the Georgetown Market building (i.e. the former Dean and Deluca). The building is actually owned by the District (it was built by the City of Georgetown and transferred to the District when Georgetown was dissolved). It is under a 99-year lease that is currently held by Jamestown (which purchased the Georgetown Park nextdoor). Under federal law, the building has to be used as a market. It is GM’s understanding that the city intends to hold Jamestown to that requirement and that Jamestown will need to get the city’s approval before leasing the building. GM does not know, but he speculates that DGS will be at the ANC meeting to discuss this process. We’ll see!

The other interesting item on the agenda is the zoning relief sought by Call Your Mother. The highly acclaimed Park View bagel shop is opening a second location at the corner of 35th and O St. (the extremely pink building). As GM flagged back in June, the location is not zoned for commercial. It would have been able to piggyback on the grandfathering that Greenworks operated under, but since prepared food is different from a flower shop, they will need to get zoning relief.

The agenda says that they need a variance, which normally is quite difficult to obtain. But GM is somewhat confused by that. Under changes adopted several years ago, you can convert a residential space to commercial use with a special exception (which is easier to get). There were conditions to that (such as the presence of other commercial uses nearby) so maybe they don’t qualify. Hopefully it won’t ultimately matter much.

GM is at least happy to see them starting this process, which must be completed before they can open. He still doubts it will be open before 2020, but he would love to be wrong.

Here is the rest of the agenda:
